Changing Face

Twenty years ago, I did photographs of Hartford Village, Vt., for a Valley News profile of the changing face of the small community. I did pictures at a bait shop, Head Start program, the library, Bingo hall and at professional photo lab that was about to close. Since then, the majority of the small businesses focused on photography in the area are gone, replaced by smartphones and apps.

Color printer Dennis Grady checks a print against a customer’s guide during a work day at Hathorn/Olson Photo Labs in Hartford, Vt., in Jan. 1996. After 10 years, the business closed to leave a commercial vacancy in the village.

Times Three

Last week Cara and Dean invited me back to photograph their growing family in Barnard, Vt. It’s my third visit for family portraits over the years — I also photographed their wedding in 2008. It’s a treat to be a part of their lives!

Katharine & Eben

Katharine and Eben were married out-of-state earlier this year but waited until a week before Halloween to celebrate with friends and family at Langwood Farm in Cornish, N.H. Halloween is Katharine’s favorite holiday — the barn and tent were extensively decorated and guests were asked to come in costume. How many wedding celebrations include a headless horseman? Family Tradition

Over the weekend Chris and Larisa asked me to photograph their young family during a college reunion in West Windsor, Vt. Getting a portrait done is an annual tradition for them — this year, the family grew with their friends’ kids joining the fun!

Family Memories

As time passes, moments in photography take on a new life. While visiting my family in South Dakota in 1991, I spent the day with my grandfather, taking pictures and cherishing my time with him. After he passed away eight years later, I gave everyone prints of him enjoying an ice cream with me in a small town diner. Mine is still on my desk at home, a memory of a wonderful day.
